Details December 2007

Being a fellow Irishman it's a rare occurrence in which I take a bash at Jonathan Rhys Meyers but sometimes duty calls. First of all, I've got to get it out there that I'm quite the fan of Steven Klein's work (Klein shot the cover) but his Details covers just fail to meet the mark. No better example than this one here. Meyers is contorted in a tad too feminine pose that compromises whatever masculinity he possesses and then broods in a thoroughly fake manner. Secondly, the styling-well-Details may not be the most dynamic of men's magazines but this is just positively unimaginative. Note also, his tan looks v.suspicious indeed.

This magazine-cover bashing seems to be catching on...

'Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten...'

Flawlessly crafted with the greatest of attention paid to the most minute of details-this is how one might imagine Florence's Stefano Bemer creates his bespoke and brilliant footwear. The epitome of gentlemanly elegance his shoes are also truly individual, Bemer even uses red-wine as a dye to colour some of his leathers. I could go on but I'm not sure words could do the fruits of his labour justice...

Luke set to nuke...

Chances are you've seen a mention of a certain Luke Worrall on more than one occasion here, or perhaps at COACD. He's new with D1 Models in London and stands 6ft tall at 17 years of age. Fresh faced exuberance is his forte, platinum tufty hair renders a striking resemblance to a one, Agyness Deyn. In fact-being British, blonde and punk-Worrall could be considered her male-counterpart.

Dazed's new muse...

'The best wave...'

From Alexander McQueen's SS08 collection to Vogue Japan fashion director, Gene Krell, surfing's all around the world.

Above: Gene Krell talks to Men's Style on his undying passion for the sport and the importance of the best wave. He states it's not all about the flashiest wetsuit but, frankly, I think he's lying a tad, don't you?

Here's why...

Men's Vogue November 2007

Although I accept Men's Vogue is a rather conventional men's magazine and not-overall- a fashion-focused publication I can't help but feel utter and genuine contempt for the very ugly layout and the a-tad-bland subject material. This may seem totally trivial but I really think the issue should be addressed. I'm sure Conde Nast are quite aware of their target market but don't they realise that there are American men who are more than a little interested in the sartorial aspect of things? Is it their outright intention to provide a comprehensive and very forward publication-in terms of menswear-for the European market, namely, Vogue Hommes International, and almost entirely neglect the American market in this sense?

Having said all that, Mr.Washington looks his usual dashing self.

RK OK

Romain Kremer, a relative new-kid on the menswear block has ensnared me of late. With a boundary-defying and intensely colourful SS 08 collection Kremer shows he's in no sense, one to follow some of the restrictive, unspoken menswear rules.

AW 07 08

After winning the Special Award for Creativity- International de Mode et de Photographie à Hyères 2005 Kremer did not decelerate showing several more innovative and illuminatingly refreshing creations...

Brando.

I should probably be posting this at a more apt time...when something like a retrospective of Brando's magnificent work/Brando's anniversary crops up but I'm fresh out of excuses and to be perfectly honest, I reckon anytime of day/year is perfectly suitable for a spot of Brando admiration.

Arguably the most influential actor of all time, Brando evoked such feeling whether it be fury or untamed lust. Above all, the temperamental Brando brought a very unique and intense passion to his work. A sound role-model, don' t you think?-wife-beating and mafia-matters aside.

Brando as the fiery yet tender Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire-wearing that tight-fit crew neck that was to symbolize lean and mean for some time.

As Don Corleone in The Godfather for which he won an Academy Award. Sicilian mafia-style never looked so sharp.

Last Tango in Paris seems to be getting a lot of attention from the femmes right now due to Maria Schneider's apparel. However, Brando's Paul should also be given due credit. A suave 70s style that incorporates structured jackets, tailored pants, woolen ties and that ever-present crew tee. That is of course when they're actually wearing something.

S***R Collaborations for AW 07

I've been a S***R devotee for quite some time now and each and every time I buy their wares I never fall short of adoration. So incredibly of-the-moment and always with a directional, astounding style injected with the uber-cool essence of the London streets, Swear are permanently on-form.

Not a label to hog all the glory, Swear reguarly join with a variety of creatives from graffiti artists to big-time retailers such as Topman, to produce footwear that's wearable, casual, dashing and comfortable and so many more adjectives.

Here are the collabs. for AW 07 08...

Move on Tom...

Tom Ford's feature to be found in the November issue of Out Magazine left me disappointed and decidedly irritated. Ford is, of course, a more than capable and without a doubt resourceful designer, we're all aware of the many wonders he's worked from Gucci(I heard at one point the house didn't even possess a photocopier...) to YSL Rive Gauche but I'm sure we're also all quite aware of Ford's penchant for the sensual and sexual, provocation and allure which has, I think, grown so terribly weary of late.

That's why when I saw these images I just sighed with indifference...

Tediously amateurish photography(Terry Richardson's to blame) and an incomprehensingly boring concept. It's time for Tom to move on.

Sheer Here for SS 08

From frail see-through knits at Prada, to plastique transparency at Burberry Prorsum. One of the hottest trends for SS08.

I think it goes without saying you shouldn't dare try this without a washboard midriff, strive to incorporate the sheer aspect subtly, as seen at Jil Sander and remember, it's only a trend, retain your style.

Gentlemen's Quarterly

Vogue launched their extensive online archive of delectable covers not so long ago and now GQ have made a move in the same vein, 50 years of GQ. I've selected a few of my personal favourites.

Interesting to see the number of covers featuring semi-clothed women rocketed post-millenium.

'Sean O'Pry-VNY'

As the wiseman, JD, once said - "Not in twenty years has there been a face like VNY's Sean Opry" - I reckon it's been much, much longer, if ever. Feline features that usually only manifest in females are Sean O's greatest strengths, this of course does not deem him feminine but instead an otherwordly masculine sculpture. Jovial, charming and taking it all in his stride, take a hint from him and you'll never be without your gentlemanly swagger.
